From Capital "X" : Support The NCADP!

Posted Today about Day # 8: Day 8 started out in downtown Washington DC about 6 blocks from the white house at the offices of the National Coalition to Abolish The Death Penalty. I can't tell you what an honor it was to stop in and meet other soldiers fighting on the front lines for true justice. At one time years ago when I first thought of fighting for prisoners rights I honestly thought I stood alone. Slowly it was revealed to me that I wasn't alone.

After seven days of walking this visit is exactly what I needed; it was very empowering for me. I was not just introduced to everyone vigorously fighting against the death penalty I was given important material to use while on my personal quest to educate and enlighten people on the injustices going on here in America. I urge everyone that is against the death penalty to contact the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and register as an opponent no matter where you are located...

Why we support the Campaign 4 Life and Capital "X"

At JOH and in other Abolish groups we are about PREVENTION and other ALTERNATIVES to violence and frustration-breeding in our Justice Systems. In California, Youth Sentencing is harsher than Adult Sentencing and Racism is rampant. All over the US the reports are that there is NO rehabilitation. In a South Carolina prison, I spoke with a mother who's young son had been cleared and freed to go home but then the state said they wanted to keep him for drug rehab. The only problem is that he's being held for no reason because there IS NO DRUG REHAB at the prison! I wait in line time and again out in all kinds of weather --waiting with family members and other visitors to get in. When I visit prison, no matter the rain and bitter code, sometimes for an hour and a half. The staff are often kind yet they often give lame and untrue excuses as to why they are making a handful of folk wait OUTSIDE to get in to visit. I watch the elderly, the babies and their moms, the visitors in wheel chairs develop more and more hostility for the Dept of Corrections.

I brought a man's mom to see him once from Pennsylvania to SC. She only had her driver's licence as an ID. But because it was expired (she was over 80 and didn't drive anymore) she was not allowed in! All that way and no visit with her son! She only makes it maybe every other year! Children and other decent folkare growing up watching this? Their phone bills are sky high because for years the prisons and the telephone company are making profit off of poor inmates' loved ones who can barely afford to take care of the kids and grands at home. The prisons say it's for rehab! WHAT rehab? What incentives to improve one's lot? How are the relatives of the inmates going to be inspired to get out of the hood and to better their own lives? And for what and how? Who are they going to follow? The State? Is this necessary? How is all this going to lower the murder and other crime rate?Thank God for a few folk who are making a difference with the rare programs they provide. Thank God for Capital "X"! Thanks so much for tuning in and for your caring and support!

I was hurting...but it didn't slow me down...

Campaign 4 Life Blog

I was hurting on day six, but it didn't slow me down any. I had a day full of actions waiting for me set up by my confidant, my dear friend Sonia of Poetic Images. The day started off at LaPlata Beach on campus of the University of Maryland. I got to perform a couple of songs then speak to 150-200 high school students involved in a future Leaders program. I felt this to be vital. To hand the truth over to these young men and women that have already dedicated themselves to becoming our future leaders. Everyone at this event agreed that the death penalty has no place in a civilized society.

Here I was joined by Bill Pelke of the Journey of Hope. Bill flew all the way from Alaska to join me for a few days on the walk. He was joined by Abe Bonowitz of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Issac Bonowitz and Beth Wood. I met a lot of great people. The support was amazing.

As the sun started to go down, DJ RBI of WPFW 89.3 FM/Pacifica Radio started to pump up the sounds at the Nyumburu Amphitheater. A host of student emcess and poets came together to perform, support and help spread the word. Performers ranged from high school students to Source Magazines Unsigned Hype Akir Viper/Koch Records. The energy was high, it was just the medication I needed to prepare me for my Journey of Hope.

After party was at WMUC FM 88.1 Beauty and the Beatbox hosted by Cybille Ciel was off the chains. I got to perform a couple songs and then talk about the walk and the cause live on the air and for the 20 or so students that had gathered inside the studio. It was very powerful I am grateful to have had such a positive day for the movement. I was amongst hundreds of people all day and did not meet one pro-death penalty opinion. So why do we still kill our own citizens? It's time to organize people.

This day for me was really important. I wanted to make a big impact on Maryland because they are so close to following New Jersey and doing away with this barbaric act. We need to continue to apply pressure. I urge everyone to contact Abe Bonowitz The Director of Affiliate Support National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty on how to register, organize and get involved in the movement.

Abe on Andre Latallade

I walked with Capital X from the NCADP offices into Virginia , and we stopped to make this portrait of him with the Memorial Bridge and the P otomac River in the background, just before he crossed out of DC on his way to Texas. Long-time NCADP members might note that he is carrying Sam Reese Sheppards' walking stick, which Sam carried when he walked 1600 miles from Boston to New Orleans in his 1995 "Walk for Alternatives to Violence." Sam put that stick into the NCADP fund raising auction that year, and I bought it. Capital X put a few more miles on The Stick this week in DC and Virginia.

The above photo and article below is from and by Abe Bonowitz

CAPITAL X'S " WALK 4 LIFE "

This past Sunday night my family hosted Andre Latallade in our home just east of Washington , DC . Also known by his stage name, hip hop artist "Capital X" was about 150 miles along the way in his 1700+ mile walk from Trenton, NJ to Austin, TX , where he expects to arrive towards the end of May. The purpose of this walk is to raise awareness about the death penalty and to bring more people into this movement.

On Monday, Capital X met with the staff at the offices of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty in downtown Washington, DC. NCADP board chairman Bill Pelke presented him with generous contributions from two other organizations Bill represents,Alaskans Against the Death Penalty and Journey of Hope: From Violence to Healing. Bill met Capital X during a speaking tour in Italy last year and flew all the way from Alaska to be the road crew for a couple of days in support of this effort.

Capital X is in Virginia as I write this and current plans take him through North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia in the coming weeks. Anyone interested in supporting "X" can email him at projectrevolution2010@gmail.com. You can make a donation online at www.myspace.com/capitalxaka305375 or send a check or money order to Voice of the Voiceless, Powermill Box 182, Pine Brook, NJ 07058. Funds raised during the walk will go to victims' families and abolitionist groups.

The Journey of Hope: From Violence to Healing Blog has quite a bit about this, and you can view X's "Walk 4 Life" promotional clip and daily video blog documenting his journey at www.ONLOQ.com, a hip hop network that is covering his expedition. There you can also view his profile and online show, "From the Frontlines." Recent video blogs include appearances by myself, murder victim family member Bill Pelke, death row mother Terri Steinberg, and death row survivor Shujaa Graham.

Bill Pelke with Walk 4 Peace

Our own Bill Pelke has been with Andre aka Capital "X" for a number of days now--he's been driving equipment in Virginia for this exciting Walk 4 Peace. This may be Bill's last day? I think he may be using Abe's van? Watch an infinitude of ripples for positive change and LIFE for many because of this walk. Please keep coming back and offer YOUR SUPPORT! Check out the Comments section later.

The Reason I Walk So Hard By Capital "X"

Photo gratitude goes to Capital "X" and his Campaign 4 Life supporters.

Here's "X"'s latest blog from the front-lines of the WALK 4 PEACE

This here is just one of the reasons I walked so hard the first couple of days. This is why I didn't let shin splints slow me down. I actually wasn't supposed to arrive in Annapolis till the fifth, but when they offered me the chance to speak at the Stanton Community Center on the forth, I told them I would be there. They asked how and I told them I will walk faster. Little man in the picture with me made every bit f pain I went through worth it.

I spoke to a room full of kids and parents. I am not some amazing speaker, I just just share all the wrong choices I made in life hoping people listen so they won't make the same ones. I did a little accapella and that about it. It meant a lot to me because I came from the projects. My pops did bust his back side to get us up out of there but I ended up back in the projects.

Talk about walking 4 life, I pray Micheal there in the picture took what I said to heart and fights for his community. Places like Clay street where little man lives is where authorities go to find occupants to fill prison cells. Yea including the ones on death rows.

The evening was in remembrance of Martin Luther King. A film based in these times was the main event of the evening. You're going to have to look it up trust me it's worth it. http://www.pipandzastrow.com/trailer.htm

I was watching the film and little man snuck up to me and said "you did a great job" and then he gave me a little bear hug. I never met him before but let me tell you I love this kid like a brother. By the end of the evening me 'n Michael were homeboys without question. I will be returning to spend more time with him. I wanna do all I can to make sure the state of Maryland keeps they hands off him. I love kids so any time I get asked to work with kids I drop everything and I am there. It takes a village to raise a child is my favorite saying because it's so true. If we as a people would stop being so dependant on those that oppress us, imprison us and even kill us and we came together maybe there wouldn't be so many brothers and sisters sitting on death row. We need each other but for some strange reason we have forgotten this.

I have to thank brotha Zastrow who was in the house and of course my brotha Timmy Grins for making this happen. Don't get it twisted this event had everything to do with the Walk 4 Life. I got to tell the 150 some odd peoples there what I was doing. They all seemed to agree with me on the death penalty. There was a lot of love up on Clay street. Enough to gas me up for day six. Word up, I could still feel little mans arms squeezing me. I feel like I was touched by an angel. Yea; I was.

Peace love and progress.
Howard Neal - MS death row (on death row for 28 years)
Sammy Capers - CA death row. I walked for these brothas, prayed for these brothas and will continue to do so.

Please look in the Comments section for CAPTIAL "X" BLOGSITE address and more -- KEEP WATCHING FOR CALENDAR VENUES to show up soon there if not here and for more blog journal entries. Also, just out today, sent by Dr. Rick Halperin is an important report and hope on YOUTH INCARCERATED in California! Teens are treated WORSE than adults and the racist problems are beyond belief. Current voting could change some of this. If you're in California, CALL legislators NOW. YOU could make ALL the diffrence! Those of us in other states need to do the same. Goes right along with what "X" is saying! We've gotta get these kids 18 years and under as well as older out from under their hell of No Way Out, NO INCENTIVES, no way to a better life. Keep Tuned! We love you, "X"! Thanks for walking for all of us! Keep the faith!

And don't forget to go here for a real treat

WHY THE WALK?
Capital "X" says "separated we call for life or death, I say we unite and call for solutions...Unite everybody that is fighting injustice, and keep that unity till the end!...Can we make this (Campaign 4 Life) BIG enough to apply international pressure on the USA?"

Andre Latallade, also known as Capital-"X", has been walking from Trenton, New Jersey and plans on going the full 1,700 miles or so into KEY spots in Texas...He is headed for the North Carolina border. He has a long ways to go but is "in no ways tired."

Along with public education about ways to help prevent crime, incarceration facts and death penalty issues, Andre is trying to "build a bridge" between various victims: families and youth on all sides of the death penalty. He wants to help unite families whose experience of crime, sentencing, the court system and the process of execution may not be all that different although our society does it's best to keep them apart. This includes families of victims--including victims of executions innocent or not.

Capital "X" is also speaking to youth who didn't or don't realize the effects of their own ill-informed choices and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Latallade asks "Can we make this big enough to apply international pressure on the USA?" He says "I have Italy behind me as well as London organizations, France, Denmark and Croatia." (He is also in dialogue with other places and US states.)

Along with informing the public as he walks and stops to perform, Capital "X" is also trying to raise funds to educate people on the death penalty. Monies raised from this event will be donated to murder victim's families and abolitionist groups. Anyone interested in supporting "X" and uniting in this cause to Stop Capital Punishment. Now here's THIS morning's special blog--a grandfather and his grandkids. May this homey piece of inspiration challenge us all!

Becoming an Activist
Wednesday, 9. April 2008, 02:32:19

After reading one of my myspace friends blogs, it got me to thinking on how one becomes an activist. (activism The use of direct, often confrontational action, such as a demonstration or strike, in opposition to or support of a cause).

There are many ways to become an activist and many roads in life may lead you to take action. You may share your steps with others, or it may be in private small quiet ways.

After my motorcycle accident I spent some time in a wheelchair, "rolling" my youngest grandchild when fussy instead of "rocking" her. That time gave me a small glimpse into other disabilities. Later when we found out that a woman we know who trains assistance dogs needed dog food donations, we started collecting our change. My grandchildren have watched and helped me with my Locks Of Love effort, in addition to my stand against the death penalty (very personal to our family).

We support Capital "X’ in his "Walk 4 Life" effort!

We are too far away to actually join him in his walk, so we will be doing our own small walk.

Wednesday, (April 9th 2008) with pledges of support, my grandchildren will be doing their own walk, skate, ride, here where we live. They will then be donating to the cause.

I thought that the girls would learn the most about becoming active in issues that mean something to them by actually collecting their sponsored money, getting a money order and mailing it in, as opposed to me just making an on-line donation to the Walk 4 Life. They may be young, but make no mistake, this issue is something that Starr especially has shown an interest in.

Example of pledge; I have pledged to donate a $1.00 per lap for each of my 3 girls. (lap = once around the outside edge of our mobile home park) One of my sons has pledged a total of $20.00 for Starr’s efforts, Leah has a sponsor, as does Alexis, etc.

( This is what the money will be used for:
"Capital-"X" will try to raise funds to educate people on the death penalty, and monies raised from this event will be donated to murder victim’s families and abolitionist groups". )

...Camera has fresh batteries, fridge is stocked with water, juice and fresh fruit. The recycling bin is ready and so are we...

More to follow... END blog

Again, we at The Journey of Hope Weblog encourage you also to participate in some way and to send your donation to Journey of Hope website--link to the right. Bill Pelke will make sure everything you send in Capital "X" name for Campaign 4 Life will go for this campaign.

Judge orders death row inmate Paul House released! Freedom scheduled after hearing May 28: Paul House has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair. He has most likely been wrongly-convicted of rape and murder. However, his life took a dramatic turn Monday when a federal judge ordered the condemned man's release from prison. "I'm thrilled that he's coming home," House's mother, Joyce House, said. "He's going to get the medical attention he needs. I hate that it has taken so long." Blog from Bill Pelke written Monday, April 07, 2008

I am at a Wendy's waiting for Capital "X" to catch up with me...

Capital X walked from Maryland in Washington DC yesterday.

Terry Steinburg and Shujaa Graham and were able to meet up with Capital "X" between the Washington monument and the White House.

Capital "X" was then driven to the home of Abe Bonowitz where he spent. the night. I stayed with Terry Steinburg, her husband Ben and daughter Lindsey. Terri and I met Capital "X" and Abe this morning in DC at the National Coalition. All the NCADP staff gathered for a meeting with Capital "X" where we took some pictures and explained what "X" was doing. Abe Bonowitz graciously gave us the use of his van, the Journey Mobile.

Capital X has walked about 15 miles and will probably walk another 10 miles today as we approach the Fairfax Virginia area. I stop about every five miles until "X" gets to where I am. He takes a short break and begins walking again. I drive on up the highway and wait again, sometime standing by the side of the road with an "Execution is not the Solution" sign. He has done several interviews today, one while walking and we will be meeting a reporter tomorrow morning from Loudon County for another interview.

While at the NCADP office I was able to present Capital "X" with two checks, one from the Journey of Hope for $100 and one from Alaskans Against the Death Penalty for $50. Anyone else who would like to contribute to this walk can make a donation on the Journey WEB SITE (SEE RIGHT LINK) and note that it is for Capital X's walk and I will get the funds to him.

Today has been a bit cold but "X" is doing great. He was a real inspiration to all of those at the NCADP office and also to me.

I wish I did not have to leave on Thursday so I could spend another week with him. HE IS IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE TO HELP GET HIS EQUIPMENT MOVED EACH DAY.

I hope to join up with Capital "X" for 7-10 days as he approaches Texas next month.

The NCADP blog will also be covering "X"'s walk.

More later.

Bill

1,700-mile death penalty walk reaches Maryland

Andre Latallade, also known as rapper Capital X, speaks at the Stanton Community Center about his walk from Trenton, N.J., to Austin, Texas, a 1,700-mile campaign to put an end to the death penalty. A former convict himself, a tattoo on his neck references Hebrews 13:3: “Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

The shin splints he developed in Philadelphia weren't enough to stop him from reaching Annapolis last night.
Wearing a well-worn pair of white Air Jordans, 43-year-old Andre Latallade stopped at the Stanton Community Center, a layover in his 1,700-mile walk to abolish the death penalty.

Mr. Latallade, of Newark, N.J., started his trip on March 31 from the New Jersey State House, the last state to outlaw capital punishment. On May 25, he plans to reach Austin, Texas, a state that executes more convicts than any other. He will have to walk at least 40 miles a day to stay on schedule.

"There is a lot of killing in the world. If we can stop it at one place, then maybe it will bleed over to another," said Mr. Latallade, who flows between Bible verses, parts of international law and Johnny Cash's anthem to injustice, "Man in Black."

His visit comes as Maryland sits in death penalty limbo. The state Court of Appeals ruled that proper policies weren't followed when creating procedures to administer lethal injections. As such, lethal injections were put on hold until new protocols could be developed, protocols death penalty opponent Gov. Martin O'Malley has not created.

Mr. Latallade, also known as rapper Capital X, told a crowd of 150 in Annapolis last night that his stance against the death penalty was cemented during his own incarceration.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in the South Bronx and later as the only minority in his school in New Jersey, he started using drugs at 12, selling them at 14, dropped out of school at 16, and was in jail at 17.

He spent 25 years cycling in and out of prison. He's been free since 2001, after serving about five years on drug, weapons and aggravated assault charges.

But it wasn't until he had gone to college and faced discrimination during an internship with a record company that he became an activist.

His friend and collaborator in the music business, Timm Kostenko, said he saw a new intensity in Mr. Latallade when this happened. He started reading much more, taking detailed notes, learning everything he could about prisons and the justice system. It was his purpose, Mr. Kostenko said.

"It was a gradual awakening. It was a gradual transition. He said 'you know what? There's room for me here,' " Mr. Kostenko said.

Mr. Latallade said his stance has drawn attacks. Some people accuse him of engaging on a campaign to boost his entertainment career. One person said he would think differently if his grandmother was butchered "like a pig."

He says he sympathizes with victims' families. And there are criminals who deserve to live and die - naturally - behind bars. "I understand that when your family member is murdered it is a horrific experience. But what about a mother who looks at her son in a cage, waiting for him to be murdered?" he said.

Mr. Latallade's message was important for people of the Clay Street neighborhood around the Stanton Center to hear, said Zastrow Simms, who was there to watch "Pip & Zastrow" a documentary about himself and former Mayor Pip Moyer.

"I'm glad he's here because so many of our youngsters do things that lead to it. They need to know it's no joke," Mr. Simms said.

Love from Ron Keine

Marietta and Sister Helen Echoes of Mercy

"Loved ones, wrenched from our lives by violent crime, deserve more beautiful, noble and honorable memorials than pre-meditated, state-sanctioned killings. The death penalty only creates more victims and more grieving families. By becoming that which we deplore -- people who kill people -- we insult the sacred memory of all our precious victims." MARIETTA: Love at first sight! by Bill Pelke

I will never forget the first time I met Marietta. It was love at first sight. It was in the fall of 1992, I had talked with Marietta on the phone several times and she was making a four-hour drive from her home in Detroit, Michigan to my house in Portage, Indiana.

The Journey of Hope was in the midst of planning their first event, a 17-day speaking tour throughout the state of Indiana. I had asked Bob Gross to help us organize that event and one of his plans was to do a filming at my home to help promote the Indiana Journey,

Bob had arranged for a film crew from the Central Mennonite Committee to take several hours of footage of murder victims family members talking about our losses as we sat around our sectional couch and talked about why we were opposed to the death penalty.

My cousin Judi and I would be talking about the murder of our grandmother, Nana. A co-worker and friend of mine, Maxine joined us to talk about the murder of her son. A woman came up from Indianapolis to talk about the murder of her husband and Marietta was coming to talk about her daughter Susie -- who at the age of seven had been kidnapped and eventually murdered by serial killer in Montana.

I knew that Marietta had recently been on a speaking tour in Japan on behalf of Amnesty International and would be talking about forgiveness. Forgiveness was a very important issue to me and I had been speaking a lot on that subject for about five years.

Everyone began to arrive and I was anxiously waiting to meet Marietta. I was standing at the door when her car pulled into our driveway. I watched her get out of the car and it was love at first site. For her to drive all that way to help the Journey was very special to me.

As we sat in the living room we began to share our experiences. It was a very emotional time for my cousin Judi. She rarely had talked about Nana’s death and her feelings about Paula Cooper, the girl who was sentenced to death for Nana’s murder.

One by one we told our stories and then Marietta told hers. I had never heard a more powerful story of forgiveness in all of my life. It was very obvious to me that we had both were able to bear witness to the healing power of forgiveness.

That evening began a love that continues to this day. In 1994 Marietta and I were joined by SueZann Bosler to make a documentary for the Discovery Channel, From Fury to Forgiveness, a term that Marietta used quite often in explaining her Journey.

Two years later Marietta and I took on the task of lead organizers for the California Journey in 1995. Two years later Marietta joined SueZann, Sam Reese Sheppard, George White and me to be the Founders of the Journey of Hope…from Violence to Healing when we incorporated into a non-profit organization.

In 1997 I had the great honor of introducing Marietta at the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty’s annual banquet in Houston, Texas -- where she was presented the Abolitionist-of-the-Year award. I will always cherish that honor.

Several years later I had the great pleasure of driving to Detroit and reading a portion of scripture at the wedding of Marietta and “Rancher Bob” Lane.

Marietta had always said she felt her spirit was calling her to Montana, and now she was married and in love with a rancher from Montana that loved her just as much.

Marietta only deserves the best in life and Bob Lane fills that bill. Nobody deserves a great life more than Marietta and I am so happy to see her have it and thrilled to be able to wish her a happy birthday.

MARIETTA and Friends

Keep watching for much more to come on/for Marietta during the next few days.

AGAIN, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARIETTA!

Dear Marietta, We hope to send you more like this soon and other surprises along the way.
During the 1998 Texas Journey of Hope, Sunny Jacobs said Marietta is a “shining being”. I think that is a great description of Marietta. I know that just to be in her presence is to be uplifted and to be warmed by her radiant smile. Her joyous spirit permeates the air around her. I first heard her tell her story in 1994 when she and Magdaleno Rose-Avila came to Alaska to do a speaking tour. Our paths have crossed several times over the ensuing years. Last summer I was honored to have Marietta and her husband Bob as houseguests. Marietta – I hope this is you best birthday ever!

Much love,

Kathy

Sister Helen Echoes Martin Luther King

"Love is the ultimate force that makes for the saving choice of life and good against the damning choice of death and evil. Therefore the first hope in our inventory must be the hope that love is going to have the last word." from the end of King's 'Beyond Vietnam' Speech.

"When I see something that's not right, I can't say I'm neutral, I've gotta take a stand...if we're not raising our voices against injustice, we're part of it."
Sister Helen Prejean at Mars Hill College, April 03, 2008

"I watch what I do to see what I really believe.
Belief and faith are not just words. It’s one thing for me to say I’m a Christian, but I have to embody what it means; I have to live it." From a recent essay and speech by Sister Helen.

Yesterday at Mars Hill College Sister Helen spoke as eloquently as ever or more so. The lighting made me think at first, Sister had dyed her hair but as she moved in her animated, passionate way, I could see her silver hair. Still, she doesn't seem to age in any way visible. There were a few bored-looking students nearby at first. One was apparently sleeping. Yet as Sister got into her true and personal stories--and WHAT a Story-Teller she is-- she had them all in the palm of her hand.

Here are a few excerpts from her talk last night and there are more excerpts below. She gave me permission to pull excerpts and put them here in honor of the
40th anniversary of King's assassination.

..(there's so much going on) we don't know where to put our hands on the rope...you gotta put faces on people.

Quotes William Faulkner "The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself." We gotta see things from all sides.

I believe we get God's grace when we need it, not ahead of time.

The following is from Sister Helen's book
-The Death of Innocents- about two men she believes were innocent whom she accompanied to death row.

Now, waiting here in the death house, I pray. No, God, not Dobie. I've been visiting him for eight years...He has a slight build, keeps his hair cropped close, and wears big glasses, which he says gives him an intellectual look...

King Means Us!

In his last years of life, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out forcefully against war and American military expenditures robbing the poor so that they become angrier and angrier. Then as now some of his most profound and courageous stands were and are silences by major U.S. media outlets. Now, 40 years after his death most still ignores King's strong challenges to see that Love overcomes all hate and vengeance and the understanding of the disenfranchised prevails.
